Thyroid cancer develops in the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. It is one of the more common endocrine cancers and is generally very treatable when found early. There are several types, with papillary thyroid cancer being the most prevalent and often the least aggressive. Follicular, medullary, and anaplastic thyroid cancers are less common but vary in their behavior and prognosis. While thyroid cancer can affect anyone, it is more commonly diagnosed in women and in younger adults compared to many other cancers.
Symptoms
A noticeable lump or swelling at the base of the neck is often the first sign of thyroid cancer. You may also experience changes in your voice, such as hoarseness, that do not resolve. Difficulty swallowing or a feeling of something pressing on the throat can occur. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, persistent throat pain, and in rare cases, difficulty breathing may also develop. Many thyroid nodules are benign, but any persistent lump in the neck should be evaluated by a doctor.
Causes
The exact cause of thyroid cancer is not fully understood. Exposure to radiation, particularly during childhood or as part of medical treatment, increases the risk significantly. Family history of thyroid cancer and certain inherited genetic syndromes are associated with a higher likelihood. Women are more frequently affected than men. Iodine deficiency in the diet has been linked to certain thyroid conditions that may increase risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis usually begins with a physical examination of the neck followed by an ultrasound. Blood tests to assess thyroid function and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels are performed. A fine needle aspiration biopsy is used to collect cells from the thyroid nodule for examination. Radioactive iodine scans may also be done in some cases.
Treatment
Surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid gland is the primary treatment. Radioactive iodine therapy, thyroid hormone therapy, radiation, and targeted therapy may be used depending on the type and extent of cancer.
