Testicular cancer develops in the testicles, which are part of the male reproductive system and produce sperm and testosterone. It is one of the most common cancers in young and middle-aged men, yet it is also one of the most treatable forms of cancer when detected early. Despite its association with younger men, testicular cancer can occur at any age. Regular self-examination and awareness of changes in the testicles can lead to early detection and a significantly better outcome.
Symptoms
The most common sign of testicular cancer is a painless lump or swelling in one of the testicles. You may notice a change in size or shape of a testicle, or a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum. A dull ache in the lower abdomen or groin may also occur. In some cases, breast tenderness or growth can develop due to hormonal changes caused by certain tumor types. Back pain or shortness of breath may appear if the cancer has spread. Any unusual change should be examined without delay.
Causes
The exact cause is not fully known, but certain factors increase the risk. Undescended testicle, known as cryptorchidism, is a well-established risk factor. Family history of testicular cancer and personal history of cancer in the other testicle also raise susceptibility. Certain inherited conditions and abnormal testicle development may contribute as well.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis begins with a physical examination followed by an ultrasound of the scrotum. Blood tests measuring tumor markers such as AFP, hCG, and LDH provide important information. Surgical removal of the affected testicle, called orchiectomy, is typically performed both as a diagnostic and therapeutic step. CT scans help assess whether the cancer has spread.
Treatment
Treatment includes surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy, often in combination. The prognosis for testicular cancer is generally very favorable, particularly for early-stage disease.
