Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, develops when malignant cells form in the lining of the stomach. The stomach plays a central role in the digestive process, and cancer here can disrupt normal digestion and cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms. It tends to develop slowly over many years, often beginning as precancerous changes in the stomach lining. Most stomach cancers are adenocarcinomas, originating from the glandular cells of the stomach's inner lining. Though the incidence has been declining in some regions, it remains a serious condition that requires early and accurate diagnosis for the best outcomes.
Symptoms
Early stomach cancer may cause no symptoms at all. As it develops, you might notice persistent indigestion or heartburn, a feeling of discomfort or bloating after meals, or nausea. Difficulty swallowing or feeling full after eating only a small amount are also common. Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, vomiting, sometimes with blood, and dark or tarry stools are more serious signs. Pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen may develop over time. These symptoms should be reported to a doctor, especially if they are new or worsening.
Causes
Infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria is strongly associated with stomach cancer and is one of the most common contributing causes. Smoking, a diet high in salty or smoked foods, and low consumption of fruits and vegetables also raise the risk. Family history of stomach cancer, certain genetic conditions, and previous stomach surgery can increase susceptibility. Older age and male gender are also noted risk factors.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves an Upper GI Endoscopy, where a flexible tube is used to examine the stomach lining, along with a biopsy. Imaging tests such as CT scans are used to determine the extent of the disease. Blood tests and staging tests help guide treatment planning.
