Pancreatic cancer develops in the tissues of the pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach that plays a critical role in digestion and blood sugar regulation. It is one of the more challenging cancers to detect early because the pancreas is positioned deep within the body and symptoms may not appear until the disease has advanced. The most common form is pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, which arises in the cells lining the ducts of the pancreas. Despite its aggressive nature, advances in targeted therapy and immunotherapy are opening new avenues in its treatment. Awareness of symptoms and risk factors is essential for timely diagnosis.
Symptoms
Pancreatic cancer often produces no obvious symptoms in its early stages. As it progresses, you may notice jaundice, which causes yellowing of the skin and eyes. Abdominal or back pain that starts gradually and becomes persistent is common. Unexplained weight loss, poor appetite, and digestive problems such as nausea and changes in stool color may occur. New-onset diabetes or worsening blood sugar control in an existing diabetic can sometimes be an early indicator. Blood clots and extreme fatigue are also noted in some cases.
Causes
Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors for pancreatic cancer. Long-standing diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, and obesity are also associated with increased risk. Family history and inherited genetic mutations such as BRCA2 play a role in a minority of cases. Age and male gender are additional contributing factors.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves CT scans, MRI, endoscopic ultrasound, and blood tests including the CA 19-9 tumor marker. A biopsy is needed to confirm the diagnosis. Staging tests help determine whether and how far the cancer has spread, which directly influences treatment decisions.
Treatment
Treatment may involve surgery such as the Whipple procedure, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. The treatment plan is guided by the stage of cancer and the patient's overall health. MOC Cancer Care Center in Faridabad offers advanced pancreatic cancer care with a committed team of specialists.
