Ovarian cancer originates in the ovaries, which are a key part of the female reproductive system responsible for producing eggs and hormones. This type of cancer is often referred to as a silent disease because it tends to develop without obvious symptoms in the early stages. By the time symptoms appear, the cancer may have already spread beyond the ovaries. Despite this, advances in diagnosis and treatment have significantly improved outcomes for many women. Understanding the risk factors and paying attention to subtle body changes can make a meaningful difference in early detection.
Symptoms
Ovarian cancer symptoms are often vague and easy to overlook. You may notice persistent bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, or a feeling of fullness after eating only a little. Frequent urination or an urgent need to urinate can also occur. Changes in bowel habits, unexplained fatigue, and back pain are other signs. In some cases, menstrual changes or pain during intercourse may be noticed. These symptoms may seem unrelated but when they persist over several weeks, it is important to see a doctor.
Causes
The exact cause of ovarian cancer is not entirely understood. [9.1]Family history and certain genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 increase the risk considerably. Women who have never been pregnant, who started periods early, or who reached menopause later may face a higher risk. Hormone replacement therapy and endometriosis have also been associated with an elevated risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis may involve a pelvic examination, transvaginal ultrasound, and blood tests to measure the CA-125 protein, which is often elevated in ovarian cancer. CT scans or MRI may be used for further evaluation. A biopsy or surgery is often needed to confirm the diagnosis and determine the stage.
Treatment
Surgery to remove the tumor along with chemotherapy is the most common treatment approach. Targeted therapy and hormone therapy may also be recommended.
