Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide and begins when abnormal cells in the lungs grow in an uncontrolled manner. The lungs are responsible for supplying oxygen to the body and removing carbon dioxide, making their health critical. Lung cancer is broadly classified into two main types: non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer. Non-small cell lung cancer is more common and tends to grow more slowly, while small cell lung cancer is more aggressive. Smoking is the most well-known risk factor, but non-smokers can also develop the condition. Early detection significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.
Symptoms
Lung cancer often does not cause noticeable symptoms in its earliest stages. Over time, you may develop a persistent cough that does not go away or gets worse. Coughing up blood, even in small amounts, is a warning sign. Shortness of breath, chest pain, and wheezing are other common symptoms. Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and recurring lung infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis may also occur. Hoarseness of voice or difficulty swallowing can appear as the cancer progresses. Any of these symptoms that persist should be evaluated promptly.
Causes
Smoking remains the leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for the majority of cases. Exposure to secondhand smoke also increases the risk. Radon gas exposure, especially in poorly ventilated buildings, is another significant cause. Occupational exposure to asbestos, arsenic, chromium, and other carcinogens raises the risk as well. Air pollution is increasingly being recognized as a contributing factor. A family history of lung cancer and certain genetic factors can also make some individuals more susceptible.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis begins with a physical examination and review of symptoms. Imaging tests like chest X-rays, PET Scan and CT scans help detect abnormal areas in the lungs. A bronchoscopy or needle biopsy may be performed to collect tissue samples. Sputum cytology tests can sometimes detect cancer cells. Molecular testing of the tumor helps identify specific genetic mutations that guide treatment decisions.

Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. The approach depends on the cancer type, stage, and overall health.
