Liver cancer is a condition where abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the liver, one of the most vital organs in the human body. The liver performs hundreds of essential functions, including filtering toxins from the blood, producing bile for digestion, and storing energy. When cancer develops here, it can significantly disrupt these functions and affect overall health. The two main types are primary liver cancer, which begins in the liver itself, and secondary liver cancer, which has spread from another organ. Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common form of primary liver cancer. Early detection plays a very important role in improving outcomes.
Symptoms
In the early stages, liver cancer may not produce obvious symptoms. As it progresses, you might notice unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, or a feeling of fullness even after eating a small amount. Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially in the upper right area, is common. You might also notice swelling in the abdomen, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), and general fatigue or weakness. Nausea and vomiting may also occur. Some people develop a lump under the right side of the ribs. These symptoms should not be ignored, particularly if they persist or worsen over time.
Causes
Liver cancer is often linked to chronic liver conditions. Cirrhosis caused by long-term alcohol use or hepatitis B or C infection significantly increases the risk. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is also an emerging risk factor. Exposure to aflatoxins, toxins produced by molds found in certain foods, is another contributing factor. Diabetes and obesity can raise the risk as well. Family history and certain genetic conditions may also play a role in some cases.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a combination of blood tests, including liver function tests and alpha-fetoprotein levels. Imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI help visualize the liver and detect abnormal growths. A liver biopsy may be performed to confirm the presence of cancer cells. The stage of cancer is then determined to plan the most appropriate treatment.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the stage of cancer, the extent of liver damage, and the overall health of the patient. Options include surgery to remove the tumor, liver transplantation, ablation therapies, targeted drug therapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy.
