Kidney cancer, also known as renal cancer, develops in the kidneys, the two bean-shaped organs responsible for filtering waste products from the blood and producing urine. The most common type in adults is renal cell carcinoma, which accounts for the large majority of kidney cancer diagnoses. Another type, transitional cell carcinoma, can develop in the renal pelvis where urine collects. In children, Wilms tumor is the most frequently seen kidney cancer. Kidney cancer is often discovered incidentally during imaging for unrelated conditions, which means many patients are diagnosed at early stages when treatment is most effective. Understanding the symptoms still remains important for timely detection.
Symptoms
Blood in the urine, which may appear pink, red, or brown, is one of the most common symptoms. A lump or mass that can be felt in the side or abdomen may be noticed. Persistent pain in the lower back or side that is not related to injury is also a common sign. Unexplained weight loss, fatigue, fever without infection, and night sweats may occur. High blood pressure that is difficult to control and anemia are other signs associated with kidney cancer. Some people experience no symptoms at all until the cancer is discovered through a scan.
Causes
Smoking and obesity are among the most established risk factors. High blood pressure and certain medications used to manage it have been associated with an elevated risk. Long-term dialysis, hereditary conditions such as von Hippel-Lindau disease, and a family history of kidney cancer increase susceptibility. Exposure to certain chemicals such as trichloroethylene in industrial settings has also been linked to kidney cancer.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves urine and blood tests, as well as imaging such as an ultrasound, a CT scan, or an MRI. A biopsy may be performed in certain cases to confirm the diagnosis. Staging is assessed through imaging to guide the most appropriate treatment.
Treatment
Surgery to remove part or all of the kidney is the primary treatment. Targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and in some cases radiation are used for more advanced disease.
