Intestinal cancer refers to malignancies that develop in the small or large intestine. While colorectal cancer affecting the colon and rectum is the more common form, cancers can also develop in the small intestine, though these are relatively rare. The small intestine plays a vital role in digesting food and absorbing nutrients. The large intestine, or colon, absorbs water and manages waste. Cancer in either part can disrupt these essential functions. Small intestinal cancers include adenocarcinoma, carcinoid tumors, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, and lymphomas. Each type requires a distinct approach to diagnosis and treatment.
Symptoms
Symptoms can be subtle and may take time to become obvious. Abdominal pain or cramping that is persistent, unexplained weight loss, and changes in bowel habits are common signs. Nausea, vomiting, and a feeling of fullness are reported in many cases. Blood in the stool, dark tarry stools, or rectal bleeding may occur. Fatigue due to internal bleeding-related anemia, and in some cases a visible or palpable abdominal mass, may also develop. Symptoms that persist without explanation should be evaluated.
Causes
The risk factors for intestinal cancer depend on the specific type. Crohn's disease affecting the small intestine increases risk of small bowel adenocarcinoma. Celiac disease is also linked to higher risk. Genetic syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis and Lynch syndrome are significant contributors. Previous abdominal radiation, a history of colorectal polyps or cancer, and certain dietary habits may also contribute to risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves imaging tests such as CT enterography, capsule endoscopy for visualizing the small intestine, and push enteroscopy or double-balloon enteroscopy for tissue sampling. Blood tests and colonoscopy help assess overall intestinal health. Biopsy confirms the diagnosis and identifies the tumor type.
