Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women globally and is increasingly diagnosed among women in India as well. It develops when cells in the breast grow in an uncontrolled manner, most often beginning in the milk-producing glands or the ducts that carry milk to the nipple. While far more prevalent in women, men can also develop breast cancer. There are different types of breast cancer, with invasive ductal carcinoma being the most frequently diagnosed. Early detection through routine screening and self-examination has proven to save lives and significantly improve treatment outcomes. Awareness, regular check-ups, and timely action are key.
Symptoms
A new lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area is one of the most recognized signs. Changes in the size, shape, or appearance of the breast should also be noted. Skin changes such as redness, dimpling that resembles orange peel, or a rash around the nipple are important warning signs. Nipple discharge that is not breast milk, pain in the breast or nipple, and an inverted nipple that was not previously inverted are symptoms that deserve attention. Many lumps in the breast are benign, but all should be evaluated.
Causes
Increasing age is the most significant risk factor. Family history of breast cancer and genetic mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 considerably raise risk. Dense breast tissue, early onset of periods, late menopause, not having children, use of hormone replacement therapy, and obesity after menopause are contributing factors. Alcohol use and radiation exposure to the chest earlier in life also increase risk.
Diagnosis
Mammography remains the standard screening tool. Ultrasound and MRI provide additional detail when needed. A biopsy confirms whether a suspicious area is cancerous and helps determine the cancer type. Hormone receptor and HER2 testing help tailor the treatment plan.
