Brain cancer refers to the growth of malignant tumors in the brain, which can arise from brain tissue itself or spread from cancer in another part of the body. Primary brain tumors that originate in the brain include gliomas, meningiomas, and pituitary tumors, among others. Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive forms of primary brain cancer. The brain controls virtually every function of the body, and a tumor in this location can affect movement, memory, speech, and cognitive function depending on where it develops. Brain cancer is less common than many other cancers but demands highly specialized care and treatment.
Symptoms
Headaches that are new, persistent, or gradually worsening are among the most common early symptoms. They may be worse in the morning or when lying down. Seizures, even without a previous history of epilepsy, can be a presenting sign. Changes in vision, hearing, or speech, memory problems, confusion, and personality or behavioral changes may occur. Weakness or numbness on one side of the body, balance problems, and nausea or vomiting are also reported. These symptoms depend on the tumor's location within the brain.
Causes
The exact cause of most primary brain tumors is not well understood. Exposure to ionizing radiation is the clearest known risk factor. Certain rare genetic disorders such as neurofibromatosis and Li-Fraumeni syndrome are associated with increased brain tumor risk. There is no proven link between mobile phone use and brain cancer according to current research, though studies continue. Age and a family history of brain tumors are additional contributing factors.
Diagnosis
MRI of the brain with contrast is the primary imaging tool used to detect and characterize brain tumors. CT scans may also be used. A tissue biopsy, either through surgery or stereotactic techniques, confirms the diagnosis and identifies the tumor type and grade, which is essential for planning treatment.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the tumor type, size, location, and grade, and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and tumor treating fields.
