Bone cancer refers to cancer that originates in the cells of the bone. It is relatively rare compared to cancers that spread to the bones from other parts of the body, which are known as secondary or metastatic bone cancer. Primary bone cancers include osteosarcoma, which is the most common type and usually affects the long bones such as those in the arms and legs, Ewing sarcoma, which tends to occur in younger people, and chondrosarcoma, which develops in cartilage. Bone cancer can affect any bone in the body and occurs most frequently in children, teenagers, and young adults, although adults can be affected as well.
Symptoms
Pain in the affected bone is usually the first and most consistent symptom. Initially it may come and go and be mistaken for a sports injury, but over time it becomes persistent and can worsen at night. Swelling or a lump near the bone may become visible. The affected limb might feel weak or tender. Fractures can occur in weakened bones with relatively minor injuries. Fatigue, unintended weight loss, and reduced mobility of the nearby joint are also signs that may develop.
Causes
The exact cause of primary bone cancer is often unknown. Rapid bone growth during adolescence is thought to contribute to the development of osteosarcoma. Previous radiation therapy for other cancers can occasionally trigger bone cancer later in life. Certain genetic conditions and Paget's disease of the bone increase risk. A history of non-cancerous bone tumors in rare cases may lead to malignant transformation.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis includes imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI, and CT scans to evaluate the bone. A bone scan may be performed to check for spread to other bones. A biopsy is essential to confirm the diagnosis and determine the exact type of bone cancer, which guides treatment.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type, location, and stage of the cancer. Surgery, including limb-sparing procedures, is often the primary treatment. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are commonly used alongside surgery.
