Blood cancer, also referred to as hematologic cancer, is a broad term that covers malignancies affecting the blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. Unlike solid tumors, blood cancers interfere with the production and function of blood cells. The three main types are leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Leukemia involves the overproduction of abnormal white blood cells. Lymphoma affects the lymphatic system and comes in two forms, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin. Myeloma targets plasma cells in the bone marrow. These cancers affect the body's ability to fight infection, carry oxygen, and control bleeding. With advances in treatment, many types of blood cancer are highly manageable or even curable.
Symptoms
Symptoms of blood cancer vary but commonly include persistent fatigue, frequent infections, unexplained fever, and night sweats. Easy bruising, excessive bleeding from minor cuts, or small red spots on the skin may appear. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits, or groin are often noticed. Bone pain, unexplained weight loss, and shortness of breath are also reported. Pale skin due to anemia and repeated infections that do not resolve are important warning signs that should be medically evaluated.
Causes
The causes of blood cancer are not always identifiable. Genetic mutations in blood cells play a central role. Exposure to radiation or certain chemicals like benzene increases risk. Some viral infections, including Epstein-Barr virus, are linked to specific types of lymphoma. Family history and inherited conditions may also be contributing factors. Immune system disorders can raise susceptibility in certain cases.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis begins with blood tests, including a complete blood count, which can reveal abnormal levels of blood cells. Bone marrow biopsy is a key diagnostic procedure. Imaging tests and lymph node biopsy may be performed. Specialized molecular and genetic tests help determine the exact subtype and guide treatment decisions.

Treatment depends on the specific type and stage of blood cancer and may include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, radiation, stem cell transplantation, and biologic therapies.
