Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, begins in the inner lining of your stomach. It usually develops slowly and may not cause clear symptoms in the early stages. Because of this, you might not even realize something is wrong until the condition has progressed. Your stomach plays a very important role in digestion. As the cancer grows, it can start affecting how your body processes food. Early signs are often mistaken for common issues like acidity or indigestion. That's why ongoing discomfort or unusual digestive changes should not be ignored and should be evaluated promptly.
Symptoms
In the early stages, symptoms might feel really mild. You might experience frequent indigestion, bloating, or a feeling of fullness even after eating small meals. You might notice a burning sensation in the stomach or mild discomfort as the condition progresses; symptoms such as loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, or nausea may also appear. In some cases, there might be blood in your stools, which should be taken seriously. Fatigue and weakness are also common as your body is affected over time.
Causes
Stomach cancer develops when cells in the lining undergo DNA changes and start growing uncontrollably. The exact cause is unknown. But certain factors increase the risk. These include long-term infection with bacteria, smoking, high intake of salty or processed foods, and family history. Chronic stomach conditions and poor dietary habits might also contribute over time.
Diagnosis
Doctors usually begin by understanding your symptoms and medical history. An endoscopy is one of the most common tests, in which a thin tube with a camera is used to examine the lining. If anything abnormal is seen, a biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis. Imaging tests like a CT scan might be used to check the spread of cancer. Blood tests might also be done to understand the overall health.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the stage of cancer. Surgery is often required to remove part or all of the stomach when the cancer is detected early. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy might be used before or after the surgery to control the disease. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and slowing progression in advanced cases.
