Prostate cancer develops in the prostate gland, a small gland in men that helps produce seminal fluid. It is usually a slow-growing cancer, and in many cases, it might not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Because of this, you might be unaware of the condition until it is found during routine checkups. As the cancer grows, it can begin to affect nearby tissues and urinary function. The good part is that when detected early, prostate cancer can be managed effectively. Regular screening and paying attention to changes in your body can help you with early diagnosis.
Symptoms
In the early stages, symptoms might be very mild. As the condition progresses, you might notice difficulty in passing urine or a weak urine flow. There might be frequent urges to urinate, especially at night. You might even feel pain or a burning sensation while urinating. Blood in urine can also be a sign. In advanced cases, discomfort in the lower back or hips might occur. These symptoms can develop slowly and should not be ignored if they persist.
Causes
Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate start growing abnormally due to changes in the DNA. The exact causes are unknown. But age is one of the biggest risk factors, especially in men above 50. Family history can also increase the chances. Hormonal factors and lifestyle habits, such as a poor diet or lack of physical activity, might contribute over time.
Diagnosis
Doctors usually start with a discussion about symptoms and medical history. A physical examination, including a digital rectal exam, might be done to check the prostate. Blood tests like PSA help detect abnormalities. If needed, imaging tests like MRI or ultrasound are recommended. A biopsy is also done to confirm whether cancer is present and to understand how aggressive it is.
Treatment
Treatment depends on how early the cancer is detected and how fast it is growing. In some cases, your doctors might recommend active surveillance, in which the condition is monitored over time without immediate treatment. Surgery to remove the prostate might be advised if needed. Radiation therapy and hormone therapy are also common options. In advanced cases, doctors suggest chemotherapy.
