Pancreatic cancer begins in your pancreas, a small organ behind the stomach that helps with digestion and also controls blood sugar levels. One of the main challenges with this cancer is that it usually does not cause clear symptoms in the early stages. Because it's located deep inside your body, it often goes unnoticed during routine checks. As the tumor grows, it might start to affect nearby organs and your normal bodily functions. You might initially think it's just a digestion issue. That's why ongoing discomfort or unusual symptoms should not be ignored.
Symptoms
Symptoms often appear gradually. You might feel a dull pain in your upper abdomen that can spread to the back. Loss of appetite and sudden weight loss are also quite common. Yellowing of the skin and eyes is also one of the most noticeable signs. You might feel tired all the time or have nausea. Changes in digestion, including pale or greasy stools, can happen. Diabetes might develop gradually in some cases.
Causes
Pancreatic cancer happens when cells in your pancreas undergo changes in DNA and start growing uncontrollably. The exact causes are unknown. But smoking, obesity, and long-term diabetes are known risk factors. Family history might also increase the risk.
Diagnosis
Doctors start by understanding your symptoms and overall health history. Blood tests might be done to check your liver function in certain markers. Imaging tests such as a CT scan or an ultrasound are commonly used to detect abnormal growth in the pancreas. In some cases, endoscopic ultrasound is also performed to get a clearer view. A biopsy is done to confirm whether it's cancer if something suspicious is found. To understand how far the disease has spread, additional scans might be required.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the stage and your condition. If the cancer is detected early, localized surgery might be done to remove the tumor. Chemotherapy is given either before or after the surgery to control the spread. Radiation therapy might also be used in certain situations. In advanced stages, treatment focuses on slowing growth and managing symptoms. MOC Cancer Care Center in Delhi NCR provides care with experienced specialists and modern treatment options.
